Bogleshole Road Bridge carries Bogleshole Road over the River Clyde upstream of Glasgow at Carmyle.
The Clyde has been crossed here since 1865 by a railway bridge, the Clydebridge Viaduct (originally known as the 'Hamilton Farm Viaduct'): the viaduct carried the railway over the Clyde and later had a footpath added to it. Road traffic though needed a longer way round.
The road bridge was built immediately to the south of the railway bridge in 1986, connecting Rutherglen directly to the motorway and Carmyle,[1] and providing a link for the Clydebridge Steelworks. Previously, road traffic between these areas would need to go by way of Dalmarnock and London Road, or across the older bridge in Cambuslang.
Bogleshole Bridge was built near the site of an ancient ford of the same name across the river,[2] and this was named after the Bogle family who owned much of the land on both banks of the river, from Hamilton Farm up to Daldowie estate.
