Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace is the house in Ecclefechan High Street in Dumfriesshire where Thomas Carlyle was born. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland.
Carlyle, one of the leading lights of the Scottish Enlightenment was one of the most influential historians and essayists of his time: his History of the French Revolution was a ground-breaking work which has formed the basis for such studies in the English-speaking world every since and his philosophy helped to shape many of the movements of the twentieth century, both those of freedom and those for which freedom was the enemy.
