Summary

Description
English: Westerkirk Parish Library. This library, founded in 1793 for workers at an antimony mine in Westerkirk, received a bequest from Thomas Telford, Civil Engineer, in 1834. The library moved into this building in 1863 and it is the oldest library in Scotland from which books are still loaned out to the general public and into which new books are placed each year. Although admission is free for visitors, the opening times are limited and borrowing of books is restricted to persons living in the parish of Westerkirk and the adjoining parishes of Hutton and Corrie, Eskdalemuir, Ewes and Langholm. The Thomas Telford memorial is on the far left 343552. (Source: Information board on site)
