Denny is a town in Stirlingshire, standing 7 miles west of Falkirk and 6 miles north-east of Cumbernauld.
Denny is a thoroughly modernised town, and modernised in a way that is often unsympathetic. At the 2001, Denny had a resident population of 7,385 but a 2008 estimate suggests this has risen to 10,000.
Denny caught amongst the motorways of the Central Lowlands, both the M80 and M876 carving through the land here. It is separated from neighbouring village Dunipace by the River Carron.
Until the early 1980s, Denny was a centre for heavy industry, including several iron foundries, brickworks, a coal mine and paper mills. The town will be the final destination for the planned Beauly-Denny electricity transmission line.
Development
In 2010, Denny picked up the "Most Dismal Town" award,[1] known as the " Plook-on-the-Plinth" trophy, awarded by design magazine Urban Realm to Scotland's most awful towns. Though the award had been given to John O' Groats, no one from there wished to accept it and a group of townsfolk of Denny, which had been the runner-up, offered to take it instead.
In the centre of Denny stands a block of flats, an undisputed eyesore, which was to have been demolished in a £15 million regeneration of the town centre but this process stopped when it became financially unviable. A local group called "Walk Around the Block" staged a series of protests about the continued dire state of the town, resulting in their collecting the Plook-on-a-Plinth.
Sport
The local football team are Dunipace FC, who play at Westfield Park where they moved to from their previous home of Carronbank. They compete in the West Region of the Scottish Junior Football Association.
