Snowdon

Snowdon in Caernarfonshire is the highest mountain of the British Isles outside Scotland, climbing to 3,560 feet above sea level. It is the heart of the great massif called Snowdonia, which forms the major part in turn of the Snowdonia National Park.

Despite its height, this is not a difficult climb on the popular Llanberis Path, but other paths are more challenging scrambles to the top. The cliff faces on Snowdon, including Clogwyn Du'r Arddu, are significant for rock climbing, and the mountain was used by Edmund Hillary in training for the 1953 ascent of Mount Everest.

Snowdon boasts some of the best views in Britain. The summit can also be reached on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a rack and pinion railway opened in 1896. (Read more)
